American Kickboxing Academy launches project to bring world-class MMA training to Monterey Bay
AKA Monterey Bay is the newest addition to AKA's existing affiliates in San Jose, Texas, Thailand, and India.
San Jose, CA. Oct. 14, 2024. The American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) announced its plan to add a new location in Northern California, serving the Monterey Bay. Headquartered in San Jose, AKA has been producing elite fighters for over forty years. Founded by world-champion kickboxer Javier Mendez, AKA has become a world-renowned mixed-martial-arts training facility, producing a long list of champions including Frank Shamrock, Cain Velasquez, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, Bobby Southworth, and many more. The project is spearheaded by retired fighter and Monterey High School alumnus Christian Wellisch.
“Christian represented AKA in competition for almost a decade as one of my fighters. He is also a lawyer and he’s done a lot of work behind the scenes to establish the AKA brand. Christian recently approached me about bringing AKA to his hometown. I can’t think of a better person to represent the American Kickboxing Academy in the Monterey Bay,” Mendez said.
Wellisch was profiled in the Monterey Herald in 2007, when he was preparing to take the California State Bar Exam while competing in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). After retiring from fighting, Wellisch joined the Army as a judge advocate. He currently holds the rank of Major. Wellisch recently transitioned to the reserve component and moved back to his hometown of Monterey.
“AKA Monterey Bay offers a family-friendly environment, making martial arts and fitness accessible for everyone. Kids, women, men, beginners and experienced competitors are all welcome. AKA’s success is built on combining the discipline of traditional martial arts with the functional effectiveness of modern MMA” added Wellisch.
